Chapter 52

When Neil and I pulled up at Zion Chemical Plant, there was already a bunch of guys, all in their forties

or fifties, gathered at the entrance shouting something

As soon as they saw Neil’s car, they all turned to look our way.

“What are we doing here?” I got a bad feeling about this and asked Neil the moment we stopped the

car

“We’re here to negotiate.” Neil responded casually as if the angry mobs were not about to pounce on

him.

As Neil was about to get out of the car, I quickly made my position clear, “I’m not going there, you go!”

If a fight broke out, a weakling like me would be knocked out cold.

Neil retorted coldly. “Whether you like it or not, you’re going. Remember you’re my secretary now. Do

you want me to tell my mom about your poor work at

I was fed up. How dare Neil use his mom to threaten me?

And yet, I had no choice but to suck it up since it was Faith who pressured me into working as a

personal secretary at Whitmore Co. If she found out about my bad attitude, she would have a poor

impression of me.

I gritted my teeth, “Fine, let’s go!”

After getting out of the car, I followed behind Neil, heading towards the furious crowd.

“Are you Mr. Whitmore from Whitmore Co.?” The man leading the group, around fifty and a bit chubby

with a not-so-great appearance, was Dean Tueley, Bonnie’s dad “Yes, I’m here today to discuss the

compensation for the demolition of residential houses. Would you care to represent the group and have

a chat with me in the car? Neil asked politely.

I thought, the power of love had turned the usually arrogant Neil into a polite and humble gentleman in

front of his future father-in-law.

Dean seemed surprised by Neil’s politeness. After glancing back at the others, he nodded, “Okay”

I knew that after this negotiation, Neil would offer a satisfactory solution to Dean. All thanks to Bonnie,

who had probably already talked to Neil.

Neil was a shrewd businessman. He would tell Bonnie that he was not in charge of the plant renovation

and was not aware of the situation. Then he would personally resolve the issue, giving Bonnie the

impression that he was stepping back for her.

How important was the amount of compensation? Neil could not have been unaware of it. Only a naive

little girl like Bonnie would believe him.

I followed Neil and Dean back to the car. As soon as I got in, I found an excuse to get out again. I didn’t

want to hear their conversation or see Nell backing down for love

In the past, I had begged Neil to spare the Finch family, but he turned me down. Compared to him, I

was a total loser.

After more than half an hour, Dean got out of the car. He didn’t look happy and just walked away

without a word to me. Neil didn’t get out of the car

What was going on? Shouldn’t he be happy? I was confused.

As I watched Dean rejoin the crowd and say something, the crowd started to get restless. I shook my

head and turned to go back to the car

“Irene!”

The next second, I saw Neil rush out of the car looking panicked.

Before I could react, I felt a sharp pain in the back of my head. I touched my head and saw my hand

covered in warm blood

“Blood…” I murmured as I looked at my blo ody hand, then I passed out.

When I woke up, I was in the hospital with my mom sitting by my bedside. Seeing that I was awake,

she asked, “Rena, how do you feel? is your head still hurting

“Mom?” I asked weakly as my vision cleared, “Why are you here?”

“You’re in the hospital, you’ve been hurt. Why would Neil take you to such a dangerous place?

Someone hit you in the back of the head with a stick. You had a severe concussion and bled a lot, but

luckily there was no internal bleeding My mom sounded blaming but actually worried over me.

I touched the bandages on my head and asked in horror, “Mom, they didn’t sh ave my hair, did they?

My mother looked at me helplessly, “Is that important?! You’re worried about your hair now?

“Mom, if my hair was sh aved off, how could I face anyone?” I complained.

“Don’t worry, they only sh aved a small spot where you were hurt. Once your hair grows back, it will

cover it. My mom reassured me.

I sighed in relief and then asked, “Where’s Neil?”

I knew it wasn’t Neil’s fault. He was negotiating with Dean when I decided to get out of the car. If I had

stayed in the car, I wouldn’t have been hit in the head

And when I was attacked, Neil rushed out of the car. I was surprised to see him so worried.

“He’s dealing with your hospital admission.” My mom said as she peeled an apple for me.

Just as she finished her sentence, Neil walked in. Seeing that I was awake, he let out a sigh of relief

and asked, “How are you feeling?

“I’m okay, I remember who you are.” I replied.

“Good, get some rest. I’m heading back to the office. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, call the doctor Neil

put some fruit on my bedside table, greeted my mom, and let the

room.

I knew Neil wouldn’t explain too much to my mom, so I told her the whole story and assured her that it

wasn’t Neil’s fault

“See, you’re making excuses for Neil again. You said you were over with him, but I don’t think you are.”

My mom seized on this.

“Mom, we should distinguish right from wrong when dealing with people. Just because my feelings for

him have faded doesn’t mean I should start slandering him maliciously, right? If I did that, I would be so

immoral.” I smiled helplessly.

My mom snorted and handed me the peeled apple. I took a bite and asked, “Where’s dad? You didn’t

tell him I was hurt, did you?”

Your dad is on a business trip. I haven’t told him about your injury. If he knew, he would definitely

confront Neill My mom said, “But it’s surprising that Neill agreed to let work at Whitmore Co. You should

learn as much as you can from him. It will be very beneficial when you come back to our company.”

My mom’s words had me laugh, “Haha, Mom, you make it sound like I’m some sort of corporate spy?”

My mom also started laughing. “You and Neil are husband and wife, so both companies are the same

to you. But your dad and I only have one kid. We of course hope that

you can take over our company in the future. If you really don’t want to, then we’ll have no choice but to

hand it over to a trust.”
